Promotion of the TRAEC Strategy at the Food Additives Risk Assessment Workshop

On June 8, 2026, the Food Additives Risk Assessment Workshop was successfully held in Nanjing, China. The workshop was jointly organized by the China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment (CFSA), Nanjing Medical University (NMU), and the Shanghai JS Life Sciences Institute (SJLSI). International experts from the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), representatives from regulatory agencies, academic institutions, and research organizations gathered to discuss recent advances in food additive risk assessment, next-generation risk assessment (NGRA), and emerging methodologies for food safety evaluation.
2026年6月8日,食品添加剂风险评估研讨会在南京成功举办。本次会议由国家食品安全风险评估中心(CFSA)、南京医科大学(NMU)和上海君石生命科学研究院(SJLSI)联合主办。来自联合国粮农组织(FAO)、世界卫生组织(WHO)、食品添加剂联合专家委员会(JECFA)、国内外高校、科研机构及监管部门的专家学者齐聚一堂,共同探讨食品添加剂风险评估、下一代风险评估(NGRA)及食品安全评价新方法学等前沿议题。

About the Workshop
The workshop focused on scientific principles and practical experiences in the evaluation of food additives, food enzymes, food flavorings, and food-related chemicals. International JECFA experts delivered presentations on dietary exposure assessment, toxicological data evaluation, specification development, and the application of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) in future food safety risk assessment. The event provided an important platform for scientific exchange and international collaboration in food safety governance.

Prof. Yankai Xia Delivered a Keynote Presentation on the TRAEC Strategy
During the session on New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) for future food safety risk assessment, Prof. Yankai Xia, Vice President of Nanjing Medical University, delivered a keynote presentation entitled “Comprehensive Health Risk Assessment of Chemicals in Food Based on the TRAEC Strategy.” Focusing on food-related chemicals, Prof. Xia discussed current challenges in chemical identification, exposure assessment, and health risk evaluation. He introduced the TRAEC strategy as an evidence-integration framework for comprehensive risk assessment and highlighted its application in integrating toxicological, epidemiological, exposure, and mechanistic evidence. The presentation also emphasized the transition from traditional single-endpoint assessment toward more holistic evaluation approaches and outlined future efforts to establish a Food Chemical Risk Spectrum to support food safety governance and public health protection.
夏彦恺教授作“基于TRAEC策略的食品化学物综合健康风险评估”专题报告
在“未来食品安全风险评估的新方法学(NAMs)”专题环节,南京医科大学副校长夏彦恺教授作题为《基于TRAEC策略的食品化学物综合健康风险评估》的专题报告。报告围绕食品化学物的识别检测、暴露评估及健康风险评价等关键问题展开,介绍了TRAEC策略作为综合健康风险评估证据整合框架的基本理念及应用实践,重点阐述了毒理学、流行病学、暴露科学和机制研究等多维证据的整合方法。夏教授指出,食品安全风险评估正逐步由传统单一毒性终点评价向综合健康效应评价转变,并展望了构建“食品化学物风险谱(Food Chemical Risk Spectrum)”的未来工作,以期为食品安全监管和公众健康保护提供更加全面的科学支撑。
